![]() ![]() The first installment in the Rei Shimura series, The Salaryman's Wife is a riveting tale of death, love, and sex, told in a unique cross-cultural voice. Japanese-American Rei Shimura is a 27-year-old English teacher living in one of Tokyo's seediest neighborhoods. In the meantime, she attempts to piece together a strange, ever-changing puzzle-one that is built on lies and held together by years of sex and deception. 'Sujata Massey blasts her way into fiction with The Salaryman's Wife, a cross-cultural mystery of manners with a decidedly sexy edge.'- Janet Evanonich. Taking charge, as usual, Rei searches for clues by crashing a funeral, posing as a bar-girl, and somehow ending up pursued by police and paparazzi alike. ![]() Rei is the first to find the beautiful wife of a high-powered businessman, dead in the snow. Her independence is threatened however, when a getaway to an ancient castle town is marred by murder. She doesn't make much money, but she wouldn't go back home to California even if she had a free ticket (which, thanks to her parents, she does.) She's determined to make it on her own. ![]() "Sujata Massey blasts her way into fiction with The Salaryman's Wife, a cross-cultural mystery of manners with a decidedly sexy edge."- Janet Evanonich ![]()

It’s a gun that once again, we can find random rolls for, and I lucked out to get Outlaw on my only available drop of the week (alternate characters appear to be bugged), meaning I am speed loading its rounds as fast as my fingers can manage. In a way only Bungie’s mastery of first-person shooting could manage, the gun itself you get from the quest, Dead Man’s Tale, is a masterwork of mechanics and especially sound design, its booming shots borderline shotgun-esque, its headshots satisfying, its western “whistle” when you hit max stacks of Cranial Spike amazing. The narrator is amazing: Sarkis' northern accent is fabulous, and the bird is one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard. The supporting characters of Zale and Brindle (and Pretty Foot!) make a fun traveling group with Halla and Sarkis, and I’d love to read more of their traveling adventures.Īwesome narration, good story, a bit too romancy I loved Sarkis, he truly respects women in his inner monologue which you can tell the author is a woman. My one misgiving is that she kept referring to herself as old and past her prime, and she’s the same age as me (36) which made me give my phone the side-eye more than once but I recognize she’s just repeating the cruel things her terrible family has abused her with. Halla is a fun character, she gets a little trying with her constant self-doubt but I think a lot of women will relate to her caregiver/selfless attitude. Gives them so much personality! Bravo! Story-wise, this was a great listen. ![]() ![]() I loved all her voices for the characters very distinct and easy to tell who is speaking. Stapledon uses his powers ? intellectual, imaginative, and observant ? to detail the conflict in its very "e human"e form.Odd John and Sirius are something else besides explorations of superbeings. Sirius, although the logical successor to Odd John, deals with quite another being ? an alien intelligence, artificially produced, a dog with superhuman mentality, who is not only superior to his own kind, but rejected by those with whom he has most in common. What is more, he has to decide what to do with his gifts. After a strange birth and childhood, John is suddenly compelled to accept the fact that he is different. The central question is: if and when a superior being is introduced into a culture, how will either survive? Stapledon?s answers are by no means romantic fantasies they are the pathetic, realistic conclusions which we, one day, may be forced to accept.Odd John is the definitive fictionalization of the mutated superman. Odd John and Sirius are no less accurate in dealing with the problem in another guise. Last and First Men and Starmaker are generally considered to be the finest future histories ever written, the gage by which all earlier and later works are measured.
